Joyce Edna Johnston Fenn

HARWINTON - Joyce Edna Johnston Fenn passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2010. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Everett Fenn.
 
Born in Torrington on January 24, 1937, daughter of the late Robert an Edna Bloomfield Johnston, she graduated from Torrington High School, class of 1955 and was a member of the National Honor Society. During that time, she was also a member of Order of Rainbow for Girls. After her marriage, she lived in Harwinton for over 50 years and worked for over 30 years at the Harwinton Consolidated School. She was a member of Northwestern Connecticut Dog Club in which she was delegate to the American Kennel Club and chairman of the dog show. For her service to the dog club, she was awarded the Gaines Dog Food Award. She was a breeder of collies and Shetland sheepdogs. She loved to read books and have her dogs around her.
 
She is survived by her daughters, Susan and Kenneth McClen, Carolyn and Kevin Kurtich and Heather Fenn, all of Harwinton. She has two grandsons, Kyle and Austin Kurtich of Harwinton, her brother, Robert Johnston of Columbia, CT and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
 
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Sunday, September 5, 2010 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Calling hours will be from 12:00 to 1:00 at the funeral home prior to the service.

Margaret "Marge" Mazzarelli

Margaret “Marge” (Kaster) Mazzarelli, passed away on Tuesday, August 31, 2010. She was the wife of the late Victor Mazzarelli.
 
Born April 11, 1924 in Titusville, PA she was the daughter of the late Adam Kaster and Florence (Washic) Kaster. Margaret resided in Torrington most of her life and also wintered in Hollywood, Florida for many years.
 
Margaret along with her husband, Victor, started Torrington Distributors in the 40’s which is still in operation today. In the late 40’s they opened yet another business called the Four Season Shop. Before her marriage, Marge worked as a governess at West Point Military Academy, where she met and married her husband, Victor.
 
Along with raising her large family, working and helping her husband manage their businesses’, Marge was an avid card player, golfer and jigsaw puzzle builder. She belonged to the CT Women’s Golf Association and was a member of the Torrington Country Club for many years.
 
Marge is survived by her three sons, Samuel and his wife, Carolyn, of Goshen, James and his wife, Mary Jane, of Torrington, Michael and his wife, Ann, of St. Cloud, FL; two daughters, Mary Bray and her husband, Jeff, of Torrington, Deborah Talbot and her husband Paul, of Torrington; as well as fifteen grandchildren; and thirty great grandchildren, whom she loved to brag about, and did often. She was predeceased by her oldest son, Victor A. Mazzarelli and his wife, Hilda; and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Marie Mazzarelli.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am Saturday, September 4, 2010 at St. Peter Church, 107 East Main Street, Torrington. Friends are asked to meet directly at church. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington.  Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2010 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

William Joseph Wysocki

Torrington – William Joseph Wysocki, 68, passed away on Sunday, August, 29, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of the late Jacqueline Wysocki.

Born in Torrington, on Sept. 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (DiLullo) Wysocki. A Teamster in local union #677, he worked in construction for most of his life, having worked for Hemlock Construction, Waters Construction, O&G, and DeFelice Construction. He was a member of the American Legion Post 38. William enjoyed cooking, gardening, hunting, fishing and was a fan of the New York Yankees. He was also an active member of the Germania Club and Forester’s Club of America.

William is survived by his daughters, Dory E. Wysocki Miville and Rosalind Wysocki; two grandchildren, Roxanne Zamkovsky and Amber Wysocki; a great-grandson, Desmond Gordon; and his longtime companion, Doreen Rhoades.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 at St. Peter Church, 107 East Main Street, Torrington. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends and family may call on Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to Mass at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Route 202, Litchfield.

Michele (Prindle) Eykelhoff

Michele (Prindle) Eykelhoff (46), of Litchfield, a deeply loved daughter, wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, died on August 21, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
She leaves behind her beloved husband, Thomas; three daughters, Charissa, Mariah, and Anna; a son, Thomas; two sisters, Wendy Prindle of Stratham, NH.; Deborah Hanlon of Stanfordville, NY.; her parents, Brent and Barbara Prindle of Sharon, Ct.; four nieces; one nephew, and many other family members that loved her deeply.
Michele had great passion for her family, photography, and community service. She loved living and serving in the town of Litchfield. Her greatest gift to all was her never-ending optimism, tenacity, and volunteerism.
Michele was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts (troop leader, fundraiser), member of the Taghhannuck Grange #100, Legal Secretary Association President, Litchfield Historical Society Clerk, Borough of Litchfield Burgess, Sharon Registrar of Voters, and she worked for the Litchfield County State’s Attorney office in Litchfield for over twenty years.

Ruth Paletsky

East Morris – Ruth Paletsky, 95, died on Sunday, August, 8, 2010, surrounded by family. She was born on December 7, 1914, in Newark, New Jersey and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. Ruth visited Morris with a girlfriend in 1938 on July 4th weekend and met Samuel Paletsky. She married Sam six months later and the self-described “city girl” became “the matriarch of a Connecticut farm family.” She was well-known for her extraordinary love of family as well as her amazing cooking and baking. She worked for many years in the family’s real estate business.
 
Ruth took tender care of her husband of 61 years, Samuel, before his death in August of 1999. She was pre-deceased by her son, David Paletsky, on October 4, 2009, and Janis Basch-Paletsky on February 27, 2003. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rhea and Sheldon Wasserman of New Windsor, New York, her grandson, Dr. Bruce Wasserman and his wife, Dr. Charissa Cheah of Baltimore, Maryland, her granddaughter, Paula Wasserman Halpern and her husband Matthew of Wayne, New Jersey, her grandson, Benjamin Paletsky, and his wife Stephanie of Medford, Massachusetts, and her granddaughter, Rachel Paletsky of New York City. Ruth had three great grandsons, Joshua and Sam Halpern and Sam Paletsky.
 
Arrangements: A funeral service will be held at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield on Tuesday, August 10, at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in Farband Cemetery, East Morris.  There are no calling hours.

Geraldine A. Ruggiero

Geraldine A. Ruggiero, 91, of Morris, passed away on Thursday, August 5, 2010. 
 
Born on May 18, 1919, in Waterbury, she was the daughter of the late Michael A. and Giovannina (Iorio) Ruggiero. Geraldine was a graduate of Crosby High School, UConn and Southern Connecticut State University. A longtime Morris resident, she had been a teacher for 27 years in the Waterbury School system.
 
Ms. Ruggiero was a member of the American Associate of University for many years, the Morris Historical Society and Friends of the Library.
 
She is survived by two sisters, Gloria Ruggiero, with whom she made her home, and Anita Miller; two brothers, Novello Ruggiero, M.D. and Louis Ruggiero; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and John Ruggiero.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 9, at Our Lady of Grace Church, Bantam Road, Bantam. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends and family may call from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Aurore E. Arsenault

Aurore Eva (Fournier) Arsenault, 89 of Bantam Village died July 22nd at Litchfield Woods Health Care in Torrington. She was born June 15, 1921 in Lawrence, MA daughter of the late Henry and Eva (Pomerleau) Fournier.
 
Aurore was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church and an avid bingo player, but her family was the most important part of her life. She is survived by three daughters, Lynn A Humiston and husband Bill of Torrington, Rita A. Landry of Torrington and Susan Dunn and husband John of Swansboro, NC; three sons, John R of Port St. Lucie, Fl, Joseph of Bunnell, Fl and Michael and wife Debra of Check, VA; a sister, Ruth Cash of Gordonville,PA; a brother, Roland Fournier and wife Mable of New Milford; twenty one grand-children and twenty five great grandchildren.
 
A memorial mass will be celebrated on July 29th, 11:00AM at Our Lady of Grace Church in Bantam. There are no calling hours. Rowe Funeral Home,

The Rev. William F. Gender, III

The Reverend William F. Gender, III died on July 22, 2010. Father Gender was the husband of Dorothy H. Gender was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, August 9, 1928, the son of the late Mary V. (Sweeney) and William F. Gender, Jr.. He graduated from Elmer L. Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre and shortly thereafter enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 351st Infantry, 3rd Battalion and Company from 1946 to 1948 in Trieste.  After an honorable discharge, he attended and graduated form Hobart College and the Philadelphia Episcopal Seminary. He served in parishes in Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
 
In addition to his wife, Father Gender is survived by a sister, Kathleen F. Gender of Elkins Park, PA; two brothers, Charles A. of Glen Burnie, MD and James T. of Effort, PA; three nieces and four nephews. He was predeceased by a niece.

Carolyn S. Rainville

Carolyn (Schuster) Rainville, 74, died July 21st at Torrington Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born March 27, 1936, daughter of the late Joh G. and Veronica (Brunnock) Schuster, she is survived by a sister, Mary Jane Evans and husband Paul of Litchfield; Step-son Richard Rainville of Oldsmar, Fl; a nephew, Joh-Paul Evans of Litchfield andfour nieces, Kelly Evans of Litchfield, Laura Currier and husband Ora, Chrysta Nicole and Lida Currier all of Torrington.
Carolyn was predeceased by a son Michael Denton and brother John T. Schuster.
 
She attended Litchfield schools and the Univ. of Vermont and had worked at Preston Farms in Raymond, NH and Rite Aid Pharmacy and Stop & Shop in Litchfield. An avid horse lover, she was a member of the Eastern States Draft Horse Assoc. and attended drafting events thru out New England.

Anne L. "Sue" Magyar

Anne L “Sue” (Macdonald) Magyar (95) of Litchfield, passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington. She is survived by her loving husband, John Magyar, and her children, James and Elaine Magyar of Providence, RI, and Ann Magyar, and Barbara and Charles Macasay of Boston. She is also survived by her grandchildren: John Magyar of New York, Andrew and Kendra Magyar of Cambridge, MA, Paul Magyar of Pasadena, CA, and Samuel Macasay of Boston.

Born in Bridgeport, she is the daughter of George Macdonald and Daisy Card Macdonald. She lived many years in Huntington, where she began her career as a teacher and volunteered as a Brownie leader. After moving to Litchfield, she became a member of the Milton Women’s Club,
the Litchfield Grange, and Our Lady of Grace Church, and volunteered for Red Cross blood drives.

Friends and family are invited to call at the Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, on Thursday, July 8, 2010 between 5:00 and 7:00 PM. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Grace Church, 715 Bantam Road, Bantam, Connecticut, on Friday July 9. Burial immediately following the service. Phyllis Bailey

Phyllis Bailey, 81, passed away on June 18, 2010. She was the widow of Felix Grenuck and James W. Bailey.
 
Born in Torrington on October 10, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Melvin A. and Teresa (Green) Price. Phyllis was involved in the American Legion Aux., and had been an active volunteer, especially with E.P. Foster School in California. 
 
She is survived by two sons, Gary W. Grenuck and James E. Bailey, both of Torrington; and two grandsons, Eric and Joshua Bailey. She was predeceased by her son, Peter Grenuck.
 
A Funeral Service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Bantam Cemetery, Bantam. There are no calling hours.

Robert "Bob" D. Cron

Robert “Bob” D. Cron, 94, formerly of Goshen died Tuesday, July, 6th at his home. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Chandler) Cron. Mr. Cron was born June 2, 1916 in Philadelphia, Pa, son of the late Ralph S. and Hazel (Bedford) Cron.
 
A 1937 graduate of Boston Univesity, College of Business Administration, he worked as an accountant for several years in the Boston area. In 1947 the Crons moved to Torrington where he was employed by the Torrington Company and he stayed until 1981, retiring as Treasurer of the company. He was an active member of his community, serving as Pres. of the Tunxis Council, Boy Scouts of America, Past Chairman and member of the Goshen Board of Finance, member of the Goshen Agricultural Society; Chairman of the Goshen Bicentennial Committee, a former member of the board of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan and the advisory committee of Colonial Bank and Trust Co. He also served as Pres. of the Torrington Rotary Club and was recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, Board of Governors at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Pres. Of the United Way of Torrington and the Board of Directors of Stillwater Condo Association. Bob also was known as a benefactor to the Warner Theater, Susan B. Anthony Project and the Community Foundation of N.W. CT. He was also an active member of the Torrington Lodge of Elks and Church of Christ Congregational in Goshen.
 
He is survived by a nephew Scott Chandler and his wife Mandy of N. Eastham, MA ; a niece, Connee Chandler of Sterling VA and his trusted friend Janice Colangelo.
 
A memorial service will be held Friday, July 9th, 10:30 AM at the Church of Christ   Congregational in Goshen. Burial in Center Cemetery, Goshen will be private. There are no calling hours. The Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Rd., Litchfield is entrusted with the arrangements.  

Dorothy L. (Collins) MacKenzie

Dorothy L (Collins) MacKenzie, 84, widow of Thomas MacKenzie, passed away on Saturday July 3, 2010 at her home surrounded by family. She was born September 10, 1925 in Waterbury, CT. She graduated from Thomaston High School and was employed at Whyco Chromium for over 30 years. Upon her retirement, Dorothy became an active volunteer in the Torrington community. She immensely enjoyed serving at the Torrington Soup Kitchen and Torrington Rehab & Health Center. She touched many lives with her caring nurturing spirit and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
 
She is survived by her children Lauren Sage, Lawrence Collins II and wife Carol, Bruce Collins and Thomas Collins. In addition, she leaves a sister Barbara Coley and brothers Buster and Walter Williams. She also leaves her beloved grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and countless others. 
 
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday July 8th at the United Congregational Church at 1622 Torringford St. in Torrington.

Andrew Pike

Andrew Jonathon Pike, beloved son of Renee Betar and Wilbur Pike of Litchfield, CT, and brother of Cory Pike of Salt Lake City, died in an accident near his home on June 27. A master tradesman, Andrew was founder and proprietor of Pike Finishing Company and had become well-known for his work in Litchfield County during the past two decades. His craftsmanship extended from wood-working artistry to large-scale building and home improvement. He brought a fine touch to everything he did.

 
Born in Torrington, CT on June 6, 1971 and raised in Litchfield, Andrew graduated from Litchfield High School and received a BA in Economics from Hartwick College in 1993 where he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. He was a talented drummer, an accomplished swimmer, a Wally ball enthusiast, and from a young age, a spirited entrepreneur. His love of life and learning resulted in a range of accomplishments from building a house to carrying on the tradition of cooking his family’s Syrian recipes. He had a passion for horticulture and gardening and was at his best caring for others.
 
Andrew is survived by his loving parents, sister, and brother-in-law, Mark Goddard, his niece and nephew Eve and Glen Goddard; his grandparents, Ann and John Betar of Fairfield, CT; and his devoted partner, Susie Bertaccini of Litchfield. He is also fondly remembered by his stepmother, Lois Pike, and stepsisters, Alayne Washburn and Amy Anderson; and his aunts, uncles, and many cousins. To family and friends, Andrew was a special blend of generosity, know-how, and gentle, genuine goodness.

William A. Leece

William A. Leece of Litchfield passed away at 97 on June 27, 2010  after a brief illness.  Bill was born on September 18, 1912 in  Plainfield, New Jersey, the son of  William Rowland and Ethel Emily  (Goodson) Leece. He attended the public schools of Waterbury CT and  received a BA degree from the George Washington University, and a  Doctor of Law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center.

Thereafter, he served for 11 years as a Special Agent of the FBI, with assignments in St Louis, New York, Mexico, San Francisco, and  Washington, DC. He then moved to Capitol Hill as Assistant General  Counsel for the Senate Permanent Committee on Investigations. He was  later appointed as a Special Assistant to Warren Burger, Assistant 
Attorney General- Civil Division. Judge Berger later served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Following his service with Judge Burger,  Bill was appointed General Counsel of the Senate Education and Labor  Committee, where he served until his appointment as Assistant General  Counsel of the Prudential Insurance Company of America in 1955. He  served in that capacity until his retirement in 1977, when he returned  to Capitol Hill as a member of the professional staff and Security  Director of the Intelligence Committee of the US House of  Representatives. After 20 years of government service, he retired in 1980 and, with his wife Pat, moved to Litchfield. Bill has since  served on the Boards of the American Red Cross, Greenwoods Counseling  Services, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Litchfield. He was  also a member of the Association of Former Special Agents of the FBI,  the Association of Former Senate Aides, and the Litchfield County Bar  Association. He was also a longtime member of the Sanctum, and an  active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Litchfield.

Bill leaves two children, Elizabeth Conte of Simsbury, CT and William  of Branford, CT,  sons-in-law, John Conte and Peter Russell,  and a  daughter in-law, Kate Higgins. He also leaves four grandchildren, John  and Patrick Conte and Nora and Tim Russell, as well as numerous nieces  and nephews.

Bill was predeceased by his longtime and beloved wife Patricia, and  his daughter, Mary Patricia.

Funeral services will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in  Litchfield at `11:00 am on Friday July 2. Paul F. Rosenbeck

LITCHFIELD - Paul F. Rosenbeck, of Cathole Road, Litchfield, died on Saturday, June 26, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital after a long illness. Mr. Rosenbeck was born in Torrington on July 22, 1931, son of the late Walter & Anna (Winzler) Rosenbeck. Mr. Rosenbeck was a retired machinist, working at Torin for much of his life.
 
He is survived by his daughters, Paula Rosenbeck of Litchfield; Kendra Rosenbeck of Torrington; and Anna Ross and her husband, Lester, of Morris. He leaves adoring grandchildren., Justin Ross and his fiancée, Jane Kosikowski; Kyle Rosenbeck and his girlfriend, Amy Cooper; Ashley Ross; and Jonathan Ross. He also leaves a daughter-in-law, Linda Rosenbeck. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Katherine (Knudsen) Rosenbeck; his daughter Debbie Rosenbeck; and his son, Randy Rosenbeck. He leaves his brother, Bob Rosenbeck and his wife, Midge, of Harwinton and his sister Audrey Pastorello of Torrington. He leaves behind cousins, sisters and brother in law, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
  
He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Torrington. Mr. Rosenbeck will be remembered for the cultivated blueberries he and his wife raised and his passion for storytelling. He built the family home over 50 years ago along with his grandfather, father, and brother.
  
Mr. Rosenbeck’s family would like to thank Visiting Nurse Services of CT and particularly his primary caregivers, Kathy Vandeusen and Laura Fulton for their love, care, and support throughout his illness. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the Bantam Fire Company Ambulance and the many volunteers who answered the call for help when needed.
  
Rowe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. Calling hours will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 837 Charles Street, Torrington on Wednesday, June 30th, from 9:30-11:00am with the funeral service at 11:00am. Reverend Michael Millum and Reverend Paul Sinnott will officiate. Burial will be private.

Torrington - Mrs. Martha W. McLeod, age 99, of Litchfield Woods, passed away peacefully with family members at her side on Saturday, June 19, 2010. Born in Torrington on November 5, 1910, she was the daughter of the late David and Agnes Lindsay who came to this country from Scotland in 1907. She was the widow of Thomas J. McLeod who passed away in 1998 after 70 years of marriage. Mrs. McLeod retired from the city of Torrington with 44 years of service as a clerk and Deputy Registrar of Voters.  She was a member of the Republican Town Committee and was Vice Chairperson for more than 15 years.  A life long Republican and animal lover, she named her beloved kitty “Clinton” to show her respect for the other side of the political aisle.
 
She leaves two sons, Gordon McLeod and wife Judith of Florida and John McLeod and wife Janet of Torrington. She was the loving Grandmother of 9 grandchildren, Thomas McLeod,  Marc McLeod, Kathy McLeod, Martha Allicon, Susan McLeod, Craig McLeod, Beverly Allen, Terrie Tarsa and Bonnie Hitchcock, 17 great grand-children  and her niece Nancy Falcinelli of Myrtle Beach, S. Carolina.  She was predeceased by brothers, John and Thomas Lindsay and a sister, Nellie McCarthy.
 
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Torrington.  Funeral services provided by the Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home of Litchfield will be private and at the
convenience of family and close friends.
 
The immediate family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff, nurses and nurse assistants of the Litchfield Woods facility for their loving care of this very special person.

Rosalind "Roz" Deacon

 

Rosalind (Roz) Ruth Deacon, 48, of Plainville, formally of Litchfield, died peacefully with her beloved family by her side on June 17, 2010 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
 
Roz was born in Torrington, Connecticut on June 1, 1962 to William F. Deacon and Norma (Strong) Deacon. She graduated from Litchfield High School in 1980 and attended Lasell College in Newton Massachusetts where she earned her Associate Degree in Science in 1982. Her career in health care spanned 28 years and was most recently employed by CIGNA Corporation in Bloomfield.
 
In addition to her mother, Norma Deacon, Roz leaves behind her three brothers, Bill Deacon, Jr. and his wife Sandy, George Deacon and his wife Dorene, and Jim Deacon and his wife Michele all of Litchfield and two sisters, Nancy Colombie and her husband, Rick and Cindy Birkins and her husband David both of Litchfield. Also, she leaves behind 11 nieces and nephews who loved her very much and thought the world of her.
 
Her family wants all to know that Roz was truly an extraordinary person. She had to overcome many health challenges throughout her life and she never let it get the better of her as she bravely fought every battle with class and dignity. She loved her family, friends and was a devoted aunt who adored her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children. Roz had many interests but her love of sports, especially baseball and the Boston Red Sox, were her true passion. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, shopping trips with her nieces, and family outings. Roz was a very caring and loving person who would always think of others before herself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and loved her.
 
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 21, 2010 at the First Congregational Church in Litchfield at 2 P.M. followed by burial in East Cemetery, Litchfield.   There are no calling hours. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rowe Funeral Homes.

Betty P. Drake

 

Betty was initiated into the Pierpont Chapter #49 in Torrington, Order of the Easter Star and served four times as Worthy Matron. She was also the Chapter’s Organist for many, many years. Through consolidation, Mrs. Drake became a member of Ephraim Kirby Chapter #75 in Litchfield where she held membership at the time of her death. She also served that Chapter as Organist for several years. In 1971 and 1972, she served as Grand Organist for The Grand Chapter of Connecticut, Order of the Eastern Star.
 
Betty was happiest when sitting at the organ, playing at home and at Eastern Star meetings. On rare occasion she substituted as organist in area churches. In Eastern Star, in particular, she was very creative in writing unique words for songs for special occasions. She was talented at and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, plastic canvas crafts, needlepoint, crewel, and dewing her personal wardrobe. She also like to read, do jigsaw puzzles and spend extended summers on Cape Cod.
 
Betty was the proud godmother of Julie (Allen) Kozikowski of Plymouth, who with her husband Charles and their children Bradley and Gary, survive their beloved Aunt Betty. She delighted in playing with and doting on Bradley and Gary, whom she called “my kids.” They always made her smile and photos of them were always within her sight.
 
Betty is also survived by Marilyn C. Mattoon of Plymouth, a dear and lifelong friend.
 
Betty’s ‘family’ wish to express grateful and sincere appreciation to Rev. Bill Hawley of First Congregational Church of Plymouth who has constantly and lovingly ministered to Betty throughout these many months of her hospitalization and confinement. Thanks also to the staff at Cook-Willow for their loving, professional, and efficient care given to Betty during her stay. She was always appreciative.
 
An Order of the Eastern Star Service will be held 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23, at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Rd. Litchfield followed by a funeral service at 5:00 p.m. Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. prior to the services.

Barbara B. Winn

Betty P. Drake, 87, of Breezy Hill Road, died June 17, 2010. She was the wife of 65 years of the late George Drake.
 
Born on Sept. 4, 1922, she was the daughter and only child of the late Robert Perrageaux and Myrtle (Leonard) Perrageaux Boissell. She was a graduate of Torrington High School and later retired from American Brass in Waterbury.
 
Barbara Teall Birge Winn, 82, died Saturday, June 12, 2010, following a courageous battle against breast cancer. A long time resident of East Windsor and Litchfield, Barbara was born October 19, 1927, the daughter of the late William and Mercy (Stock) Birge.
 
Barbara is survived by her sons, Timothy and his wife Cathy of East Windsor, Kevin and his wife Marcia of Newington, and Bruce and his partner Michael Roseberry of Tiverton Four Corners, RI. In addition, she leaves four grandchildren, Matthew, Jamie, Andrew and Brenda Winn; two sisters, Orcelia Winn and Janette Winn both of Litchfield; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Laurence and Nancy Winn of Pleasant Valley, and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her husband Fred T. Winn, son Donald Winn and sister Lillian Merrill.
 
With her husband, Barbara traveled extensively, visiting every U.S. state and many foreign countries. Barbara’s passion was volunteer work, and she spent her life, particularly after her children were grown, helping in many different ways. From working with The Society for the Prevention of Blindness to her work at the library creating books on tape, she was dedicated and tireless.
 
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the Milton Congregational Church, 548 Milton Road, Milton (Litchfield). Marjorie Fuessenich

 

Marjorie Baldwin Fuessenich died on June 12, 2010. She was the wife of Frederick F. Fuessenich, who preceded her in death, and the daughter of the late Frank M. Baldwin and Edna Snyder Baldwin. She is survived by her son, F. Blake Fuessenich, and two granddaughters, Andrea Lynn and Robin Francis Fuessenich.
 
Marjorie was born in Torrington on July 5, 1915. She attended local schools and graduated from Chatham Hall in Chatham, Virginia. Marge was a former director of the Torrington Water Company and the Maria Seymour Brooker Memorial, a communicant of Trinity Church, sponsor of numerous civic activities, world traveler, voracious reader, lover of animals, art teacher, and a lifelong practicing artist.
 
A memorial service at Hillside Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trinity Church, The Brooker Memorial or any charity of choice.

MaryEllen Rizza

 

MaryEllen Rizza, 72, formerly of Goshen, passed away Friday, June 11, 2010. She was the wife of the late John J. Rizza. Born on Jan. 8, 1938, in Brooklyn, New York, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Ann Marie (Puoci) Agrest.
 
She was the beloved mother of Edward Rizza and his wife, Christine, of Conifer, CO, Susan Chamberlin and, Jim Chamberlin, of Mead, CO, Joseph Rizza and his wife, Nina, of Garner, N.C., and John Rizza of Longmont, CO; grandmother of Clayton, Catrina, Alexandra, Jason, Mikayla, Marina, Brittany, Emily and Haley; and sister of Michele Agrest.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, June 18 at St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 71 North Street, Goshen. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, June 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Joanne A. Pastre

 

Joanne A. Pastre, 56, passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2010 after a long illness surrounded by her family. She was married to Mark Pastre for 32 years.
 
She was born Feb. 17, 1954 in Torrington, CT to the late Joseph and Dorothy (Breen) Anderson. A dedicated teacher at Sharon Center School, her passion was felt by both her students and those she worked with. She loved being outdoors, especially working in her many gardens. Joanne enjoyed traveling, whether it was the yearly trip to the cape or to a music festival.   Even when life made it difficult, she was ready for spontaneous travel.   Joanne loved animals, adopting and providing homes for many over the years. She was a softball coach, Girl Scout leader, member of the child center board, and helped support and raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
 
In addition to her husband, Mark, she is survived by her two children, Meagan Pastre and James Pastre; a grandson, Chayton Pastre; two brothers, Peter Anderson of Sharon and Theodore Anderson of Brookfield; two cousins, Margaret Paulsen of Clinton and Karen Bailey of Amenia; her mother-in-law, Theresa Pastre of Sharon and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
 
A funeral service will be held 7 p.m., Friday, June 18 at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will be private. Friends and family may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

  Robert S. Waugh

Robert S. Waugh, 69, of Lakeside, passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2010. He was the husband of the late Rita (Tanuis) Waugh.
 
Bob was born in Torrington on Dec. 7, 1940, son of the late Herbert T. and Gertrude (Scherier) Waugh.
 
He retired from the CT DMV and was a member of CHAS (Connecticut Historical Automobile Society) and a founding member of the Crankin Yanks. He had also been the former constable of Morris and past Patron of the Morris Grange.
 
Bob is survived by his brother, Thomas S. Waugh and his wife, Betty, of Lakeside and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Ann Waugh.

A funeral service will be held 11 A.M. Thursday, June 17 at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, June 16, from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.

Robert A. Flower

 

Robert A. Flower, age 87, of Goshen, died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 6, 2010. He was the husband of 35 years of Katharine “Kate” Flower.
 
Bob was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 16, 1923, son of the late Alban E. and Marion (Wimpress) Flower. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the Signal Corps. A graduate of Clarkston University, he was a retired Electronics Engineer. Bob lived in Goshen for 24 years, where he enjoyed being an active member on the zoning board and the Woodridge Lake Association. He was a model plane enthusiast and member of the Torrington Balsa Bandits.
 
In addition to his wife, Kate, he is survived by three children, Paula Pinter and her husband, Steven, of Georgia, Bill Flower and his wife, Heidi, of Plymouth, James Flower and his wife, Joann of Utah; three stepchildren, Dottie Pariot and her husband, Tom, of New York, Charles Little and his wife, Bethany, of Oregon, Kathy Tepe and her husband, Matt, of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and a cousin, Richard Brech of New York.
 
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at the Woodridge Lake Club House, 260 East Hyerdale Drive, Goshen.

Mrs. Mildred Griffin

 

Bantam – Mildred (Hilding Griffin), 85, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2010. She was the wife of the late George H. Griffin, Jr.
 
Born on March 8, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Augusta (Franson) Hilding.
 
Mrs. Griffin is survived by three daughters, Joyce Sowa of Texas, Lorraine Murphy and her husband, Ted, of Litchfield, and Valerie Duffy and her husband, Rick, of Bantam; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
 
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Milton Cemetery. There are no calling hours.

Mrs. Patricia Kane Shaver

Patricia Kane Shaver died May 25, 2010 at the age of 91 in Rockville, MD of cancer.  She was born December 14, 1918 in Torrington, CT, the daughter of Ellen Burke and Melville Scott Kane. She was raised, along with her younger brother Edward Kane, in Litchfield CT.

She received her bachelor's degree from Albertus Magnus in 1939.
 
Patricia was married for 67 years to Robert Griffiths Shaver, a Captain in the USN, until his death earlier this year. They were married on October 31, 1942 in the midst of WWII - which led to celebrating their anniversary every year handing out Halloween candy. As a Navy wife, she had the challenge of raising three children while travelling the world. They lived throughout the US and spent seven years in Panama. While there, she volunteered as an English teacher and in an orphanage in Panama City. She also collected orchids and traveled throughout South and Central America. Following Robert's retirement, they settled in Falls Church, VA where she took up real estate until her own retirement.

She spent summers, both as a child and in retirement, in Owls Head, ME at her cottage "Tidy Acres" overlooking Penobscot Bay, where she gardened, painted, and spent many pleasurable hours on her porch, chatting with family and friends, gazing out at the ocean, islands and sky.

Her last years were primarily spent caring for Robert at home through a long illness. Their connection remained strong to the end - they were born exactly four months apart and died exactly four months apart, to the day.

Patricia is survived by her daughter Nancy Shaver, son Robert Shaver and daughter-in-law Teresa Shaver, the widow of her son Peter Shaver. She also leaves 8 grandchildren: Sean Bennett, Jennifer Stavovy, Peter, Kane, Kate, Kellen, Annarose and Tobias Shaver, and great grandchildren Graham and June Bennett.

Her funeral service will be Saturday, June 5 at 1:00PM in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Litchfield CT. Friends and family are welcome. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Litchfield.


 

Diana Vivienne Smith

 

Diana Vivienne Smith, 81, died surrounded by family on May 17 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.   Born on March 5, 1929 in Hereford, England, she was the daughter of William Andrews and Phyllis Gertrude (Detheridge) Andrews.
 
Trained as a physical therapist, Diana worked at Patshull Hall, home of the Earls of Dartmouth, which had been converted to a rehabilitation hospital during World War II. There she met and fell in love with David Smith, one of her patients.   After a long engagement they married on July 24, 1954 and in September of that year sailed on the Isle de France. They came to the United Statesas honeymooners and to begin a new life as David assumed the position of plant propagator at While Flower Farm in Morris.
 
Diana worked briefly as a physical therapist at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury until she began a family after which she divided her time between remaining at home and working part time at White Flower Farm. After her children were grown, Diana worked at Sharon Hospital for twenty-three years as a physical therapist until her retirement.
 
Diana was an avid UConn basketball fan, a prize winning Jam and Jelly maker, a prolific knitter of sweaters and afghans. She loved to read and complete crossword puzzles. For many years she served as the newsletter editor of the Litchfield Women’s Club and ran the Litchfield Information Booth on the Green.
 
Diana is survived by her husband David J.A. Smith of Litchfield; her sons: Roland D.J. Smith, of Harwinton; Robert William Smith, of Torrington; Michael Ellis Smith, of Litchfield and five grandchildren.   
 
Calling hours will be held at the Rowe Funeral Home from 4-8 on Friday evening, May 21. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Michael’s Parish at 3 pm on Saturday, May 22, 2010.   Thomas Paul Krzanowski

 

TORRINGTON – Thomas Paul Krzanowski, 39, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010 at Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the husband of nine years to Sarah (Tracy) Krzanowski.
 
Born in Hartford on Feb. 14, 1971, he was the son of Janina (Sobczak) Krzanowski and the late Jan Krzanowski. He was raised in Enfield where he attended Enfield High School and graduated as valedictorian. Tom graduated from UCONN with a degree in Physiology and Neurobiology, and also graduated from UCONN School of Pharmacy, earning a Degree in Pharmacy. He had been working as a Pharmacist at Rite Aid in Winsted since 1995.
 
Tom loved to travel, had a curiosity for “mechanics”, and loved the outdoors.
 
In addition to his wife and mother, Tom is survived by his four brothers, Jan M. Krzanowski of Enfield; Edward Krzanowski and his wife Cathy, of Suffield, and their children, Michael, Alysia and Valorie, Richard Krzanowski of Enfield and Robert Krzanowski and his wife, Roseanne, of Cheshire and their children, Billy and Brian; mother-in-law, Nancy Tracy; and brothers-in-law, Matt and Danny Tracy.

 Mario C. Saccomani 

 

After a courageous battle, Mario C. Saccomani, passed away at John Dempsey Hospital on May 3rd. He leaves his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Helen Doreen Clark Saccomani and a beloved daughter Doreen Margo Evans. He was born in Castions Di Strada Udine Italy in 1920. He was the son of Luigi and Luiga Malisone Saccomani. Mario came to America at the age of 9 and as a young man was athletic and an acrobat with two local boys made a team of three.
 
He served in both 8th and 9th Air Force as a Sergeant specialist in Chemical Warfare for four years. While in the service in England he married his wife in London. He did tours in France, Italy, Belgium, Rhineland and Holland. He was a recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Distinguished Unit Badge.
 
After the war, he went back to America and worked as a metallurgist in various brass manufacturing companies. He knew many people and had many memories of the Great Depression. He served as president of the Veneta Society for five years and was a tireless worker for Free Mason Society. He served as the treasurer of the Valley and also held many other offices. Mario received the III Arthur Brown 33rd Meritorious Award in 2000 for his many years of dedicated service and also several other awards. He was currently a member of St. Paul's Lodge in Litchfield.
 
 
Mario loved all animals especially his dogs, but Pepe was his favorite and we are sure that he was waiting for him.
 
In addition to his wife and daughter, he leaves a brother Gino of Winsted, a nephew Glen of Middletown, a brother-in-law George Zaharek and other nieces and nephews. Mario was predeceased by his sister Mary Zaharek.
 
Services will be held on Wednesday, May 19th at 11:00am at the Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road Litchfield. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington. Calling hours are from 9 to 11am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any animal shelter or to a charity of the donor's choice.

 

 

Robert Allen Thompson

Robert Allen Thompson, 69, died May 14, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of forty-three years of Janet (Cable) Thompson. He was born Jan. 13, 1941, in Sharon, son of the late James F. Thompson, Sr. and Cornelia Romaine Thompson.

In addition to his wife Janet, Bob is survived by a daughter, Tammy L. Thompson Morgan, her husband John Scott Morgan and a beloved grandson Ryan Scott Morgan all of Norfolk, a daughter Carol Ann Thompson and her partner Beatrice Sabia and a beloved granddaughter, Sydney Elizabeth Thompson, sisters Elizabeth Higgs, NY, Lucy Tilton, NC, Virginia Piskura, Sharon, CT, Gladys McKiustry, VT, Grace Murphy, NY, and Linda Carlson of Bantam. Also surviving are brothers; James F. Thompson, Jr., Charles, William and Theodore Thompson all of New Milford, George and Roy Thompson, ME and Johnny and Doug Thompson of Bantam. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by a son Scott Allen Thompson and a sister Marguerite Markham.

Ruth Kimball Nelson
Died May 10, 2010

Ruth was born on the winter solstice 12/21/1921 in Greenfield, MA to Ethel (Fulford) and Roy S. Kimball.
 
She met her husband Bill when she took a summer job with a new, upstart organization called American Youth Hostels in nearby Northfield , MA.
She raised 4 daughters, house-parented a youth hostel, traveled, worked, served her community and was an avid reader and enjoyed playing with words. She loved it when the world came to her door where she gave all a warm welcome and a great meal.
 
She leaves behind four daughters: Sandra Smail Dubroc (Paul) and her 2 sons Chris Smail and Jeff Smail; Judy Nelson and Suzanne Huard; Connie Potter (Herb) and her daughter Jennifer Cooney; Jan Nelson and her son Nelson Bricker; 8 great grandchildren; beloved nieces and nephews: Inge Hauser, Chrigi Rauscher, Nils Rauscher, Teddy Nelson Goldberg and their families; and literally thousands of friends all over the world.
 
A memorial service will be held May 30, 2010 at 3pm in the Morris, CT, Congregational Church.NO FLOWERS PLEASE.

Bill was born August, 16, 1916 on the rolling prairies in Phillipsburg, Kansas to Dr. E. A. and Constance (Greiner) Nelson. He took a youth trip to Europe in 1935 and then spent the rest of his life working and living the ideals of American Youth Hostels. He met his wife Ruth at AYH headquarters in Northfield, MA and the western Kansas boy became a New Englander.
 
He worked, traveled, raised a family, served his community and loved to tell stories – and when there was a good story to be told, he didn’t want to be confused by the facts. He was proud to serve his country as an Army 1st lieutenant in occupied Japan.
 
He leaves behind his wife Ruth; four daughters: Sandra Smail Dubroc (Paul) and her 2 children Chris Smail and Jeff Smail; Judy Nelson and Suzanne Huard; Connie Potter (Herb) and her child Jennifer Cooney; Jan Nelson and her son Nelson Bricker; 8 great grandchildren; beloved nieces and nephews: Inge Hauser, Chrigi Rauscher, Nils Rauscher, Teddy Nelson Goldberg and their families; and literally thousands of friends all over the world.
 
A memorial service will be held May 30, 2010 at 3pm at the Morris, CT, Congregational Church.  NO FLOWERS PLEASE.

Ursula Dinneen

CORNWALL - Ursula Margaret (Hepprich) Dinneen, 85, of Cornwall Bridge, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 4, 2010.     Ursula was born in Neumarkt, Germany on March 10, 1925, daughter of the late Walter and Martha (Wuttge) Hepprich. She came to the United States in 1930 and lived in New York before moving to Cornwall. She was the widow of William Dinneen, Sr.
 
She is survived by her son William Dinneen, Jr., his wife Vera, three grandchildren Heather, Patrick and Garrick Dinneen, great-granddaughter Willa Pohl, brother Charles Hepprich, niece Kathy Tallardy and extended family members Nicholas Pohl, Kelsey Hanrahan and Katelynn
Reising.     
 
Ursula was a founding member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Cornwall. She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Ursula worked as a bookkeeper for various businesses in the area. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and especially spending time with her family. 
 
A memorial service was held Saturday, May 8, 2010 at at the United Church of Christ, Bolton Hill Road, Cornwall.

style="color: black;">TORRINGTON – James Charles “Norm” Shaw, 49, passed away on May 1, 2010. He was the husband of Cheri (Swanson) Shaw.
 
Born in New Haven on Dec. 25, 1960, he was the son of James R. Shaw of Torrington and Darline (Johnson) Conn of Warren. He was a graduate of WAMOGO High School, class of 1979. Norm worked as a mechanic in the automotive industry for many years. He loved playing his drums, riding his motorcycle, cooking barbecue and fishing from his kayak.
 
He is also survived by his stepfather, Kenn Conn of Warren; two brothers, Richard J. Shaw of Stuart, FL and Lance K. Fiston of South Lake Tahoe, CA; a sister, Suzanna Moore of Millington, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his stepmother, Anne Shaw.
 
Friends and family may call on Friday, May 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. A celebration of his life will be held 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Warren Woods, 251 Brick School Road, Warren.

Martha Bronson
  
HARWINTON — Martha E. (Brewer) Bronson, 87, died peacefully at home on April 30, 2010. She was the wife of 63 years to the late Stuart M. Bronson.
 
Martha was born July 17, 1922, in Torrington, daughter of the late Raymond and Annie (Hoag) Brewer. She was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served her country very proudly during World War II by decoding intercepted Japanese messages.
 
Martha was an avid history buff. She was a long-time regent of the Greenwoods Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Harwinton Historical Society, Program Chair of the Harwinton Sundowners, a communicant of Trinity Episcopal Church for 86 years and an active participant in her church community. Martha was also the long-time secretary to Executive Directors of the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
 
Mrs. Bronson was especially proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and of all their accomplishments.
 
Martha is survived by her sons, Glen Bronson and his wife, Sharon, of Torrington, Dale Bronson and his wife, Christine, of New Hartford; her sisters-in-law, Katharine Morton of Farmington and Doris Brewer of Torrington; four grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her siblings Esther, Amos, Merlin, Camilla, Ellen, and Barbara. She was especially fond of Laurie Smith, her friend and home companion.
 
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Friends and family may call on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial with full military honors will be private.

Helen W. Penfield

Helen Mae (Wilcox) Penfield of Torrington and formerly of West Hartford and Portland, Connecticut died peacefully on April 28, 2010 at the age of 100. She was born November 25, 1909 in Torrington, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Frederick Richard Wilcox and Marie Elizabeth Jeanfavre and the widow of Edgar M. Penfield to whom she married in 1957. The Penfields resided in Portland, Connecticut during their marriage where she continued her nursing career.
 
Helen was a graduate of Torrington High School and the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1931. She pursued a career in private duty nursing, caring for many of Hartford’s and Connecticut’s leading citizens. Her nursing continued throughout her life. While at Workman Apartments she would walk, with her walker, across the street to Wolcott Hall to assist with patients there. She always had a devoted allegiance to her nursing career and often declared that she had never retired.
 
Helen was a member of the Hemlock Grange, the Daughter’s of the American Revolution, The Hartford Hospital Alumnae Association, the West Hartford’s Women’s Club, and the Immannuel Congregational Church of West Hartford. Most recently she was an enthusiastic member of the First Congregational Church of Litchfield. Never idle, she knitted constantly for friends, family, gifts and church sales.
 
Helen is survived by her niece, Gail P. Sperry of Litchfield; her grand niece, Alexandra Galloway Lawlor of Canton, Connecticut; and a grand nephew, Kyle P. Galloway of Louisville, Kentucky. Six great grand nieces and nephews occupied her unending love and interest in children.
 
She was predeceased by her older sister, Lillian W. Weld formerly of West Hartford, and her younger sister, Hazel W. Perret, formerly of Litchfield.

Herbert R. Aronson

Herbert R. Aronson, husband to Connie for 58 years, father to Gigi and Peter, pop pop to Seth, Alex, Mabel and Maisy, passed away peacefully on April 26, 2010, at his home in Morris, CT.

His family is deeply saddened by Herb’s death, a loss that will always be with them. We share this sadness with his countless business friends, golfing buddies, and the many, many folks Herb and Connie befriended over the years, whether in New York City, Connecticut, Europe or elsewhere.

Herb lived a joyfully full and wonderful life. A native of Philadelphia, Herb was a flag waving member of “America’s Greatest Generation,” serving in England during World War II as a sergeant in the 8th Air Force 458th Heavy Bombardment Group.

After he met Connie, they moved to New York City, where Herb made his life’s mark in the menswear business, particularly manufacturing and selling ties. Herb founded Berkley Cravats, Ltd., and then went on to build a multi-million dollar businesses as president and CEO of The Manhattan Accessory Group; president and CEO of The Manhatttan Menswear Group; and executive vice president of Salant Corporation.

Herb was a mentor to many, a friend to even more. Herb proudly served on the Board of Directors for the Greater New York Councils of Boy Scouts, the Association for the Help of Retarded Children, and the Hampshire House co-op. He is a past president of the Neckwear Association of America.

Herb helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities and was honored for this work, by the Boy Scouts of America with the Good Scout Award and the Silver Beaver Award and by the United Jewish Appeal and the Conference of Christians and Jews with their Man of the Year Awards. He also was honored by the Neckwear Association of America and the Young Men’s Association.   

Through all this hard work, Herb Aronson was a dedicated, loving and supportive husband to Connie and father to Gigi and Peter, then grandfather to Seth, Alex, Mabel and Maisy, and father in law to Emily and Chuck. He was loved deeply by his family and the many, many friends he made over the years.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 2, at 1:30 pm, at the Frank Campbell Funeral Home, 1076 Madison Ave. (at 81st Street), NY, NY, with a reception to follow at the Aronson’s New York City apartment.

John J. Mooney, Jr.

John J. Mooney, Jr., 49, passed away on April 24, 2010. John was born on October 11, 1960, the son of the late John and Rosemary (Richardson) Mooney.
He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1978. He spent most of his life working in tree service. John was a car enthusiast who loved older cars/hot rods and enjoyed participating in car shows and cruise nights. He enjoyed building car models and was a NASCAR Racing fan. Throughout his life he always had a dog as a companion.  
John is survived by his son, John J Mooney III (Jay) of Morris, his two sisters, Karin Mooney, and Maureen Mitchell and husband, Michael of Harwinton and his niece, Ashley Rose Mitchell, along with several cousins.

Chief Ernest C. Bunnell

Northfield – Ernest C. Bunnell, 71, of 88 Campville Road, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010 at Hartford Hospital. He was the husband of Linda (Devino) Bunnell for 50 years.
Born in Waterbury on February 22, 1939, he was the son of the late Claude K. and Almira (Hulme) Bunnell. He had been employed by Mt. Claire Water Company in Torrington and had retired from Knobby Beverage Company of Plainville. He was the former manager of Big Dollar Liquors and Globe Limousine of Bristol, and former service manager for Pepsi Cola of Bristol for many years.
Ernie was currently serving his third term as a selectman for the Town of Litchfield. He had served on several town boards and commissions and was a member of the Litchfield Democratic Town Committee and the State Central Committee of the State Democratic Party. A 52-year member of the Beacon Grange in Northfield, he was also an active member of the Northfield Volunteer Fire Company since 1971, where he had served as Chief from 1976 to 1994. He also served in the offices of Lieutenant, Captain and was currently Fire Commissioner on the Litchfield Board of Fire and EMS Commissioners.
A member and past president of the Litchfield County Chiefs Emergency Plan, Ernie was a founding member of the Litchfield County Dispatch Center and actively serving his 26th year as Secretary on the LCD Board of Directors. He had also been a member and past president of the Connecticut Parade Marshall’s Association, a member and past president of the Connecticut State Firefighters Association and a long time member of the Connecticut State Fire Chief’s Association.
In addition to his wife, Linda, he leaves behind a son, David P. Bunnell and his wife, Wendy; a daughter, Teresa M. (Bunnell) Berry and her husband, Michael; grandsons, David P. Bunnell, Jr., Kenneth Bunnell, Jerry Bunnell, Michael J. Berry, Jr., and Mathew C. Berry; granddaughters, Katie M. Berry, Christine A. Berry, Kimberly L. Berry and Kiana Galli; a sister, Eunice Anderson and her companion, Vincent Forese; and an aunt, Myrtle Walker. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Jennifer Bunnell.
A Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Northfield Cemetery. Friends and family may call on Thursday, April 29 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

LITCHFIELD – Angela Ann Rosa, 89, passed away on April 22, 2010. She was the wife of the late Thomas Rosa. She was born on December 1, 1920 in Jersey City, N.J.
She is survived by two sons, Alan Rosa of Goshen and Dennis Rosa and his wife Rosemarie of Litchfield; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Doris Rogers

Doris Allmand Rogers, 98, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Brandywine Assisted Living. She was the wife of the late Rondeau Allmand and Raymond Rogers.
 
She was born July 29, 1911, daughter of the late Frank and Jessie Howe. She attended Goshen schools and Torrington High School. She worked at the Litchfield County Farm Bureau, Litchfield Savings Bank and also at the Bantam School cafeteria.
 
The family would like to thank the staff at Brandywine for the many years of caring services which they provided.
 
She is survived by a son, Percy Allmand and his wife, Cathy, of Warren; a daughter, Alice Skilton and her husband, Don, of Port Orange, FL; a brother, Walter Howe of Goshen; two sisters, Alta Palaski of Torrington, and Myrtle Cardenelli of Norway, ME; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a great- great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, two sisters and a grandson.

Celinda “Cindy” Allyn Lockwood
 
 
BANTAM – Celinda “Cindy” Allyn Lockwood, age 45, of Bantam lost her six year battle with cancer on Sunday April 18, 2010. She was the wife of David Lockwood.
Cindy was born March 30, 1965 in Great Barrington, Mass., daughter of Ross Allyn and Karen (Stiles) Brusie. She graduated from Housatonic Valley Regional High School, class of 1983. A veteran of the United States Air Force, she served for ten years, during which time she had flown on Medvac and obtained the rank of sergeant. She later worked at BD for twelve years.
 Cindy loved cat shows and will be remembered by many as a kind and caring person.
Her family would like to thank the staff of Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for the wonderful care Cindy received.
She was the loving mother of Shaun Jordan and Courtney Lockwood and loving stepmother of Sarah, Jessica, Ryan and Alex Lockwood. 
In addition, Cindy is survived by her mother’s husband, Jerry Brusie; her father’s wife, Janice Allyn; a stepbrother, Tim Brusie and his wife, Karin; father- and mother- in-law, Robert and Lillian Lockwood; three sisters-in-law, Char Colvin and her husband, Randy, Lisa Lockwood, and Wendy Faulenbach and her husband, Peter; a brother-in-law, Tim Lockwood; a special acknowledgement to cousin, Reneé Slonaker; Uncle Ricky, Grandma “G.G.” and Kim Marola, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Brian Lockwood.

Angela C. Griffin 

Beloved wife of serviceman, mother and retired state worker

 
LITCHFIELD – Angela C. Griffin, 87, of 312 Milton Road, Litchfield, CT, passed away at Hartford Hospital on Friday, April 16, 2010 after a brief illness. She was the widow of Thomas V. Griffin, USAF (ret.)
Angela was born in Waterbury, CT on July 27, 1922, the youngest child of the late George M. and Katherine (Kane) Corcoran. She grew up in Waterbury, graduating from St. Mary’s School and Waterbury Catholic High School. Her father owned the Corcoran Hotel in Waterbury and after World War II, took in many of the GI’s who were too devastated by the horrors of the war to return to a normal life. Angela’s great-grandfather helped open the first Catholic High School in Waterbury. On April 27, 1944, Angela married Thomas V. Griffin also of Waterbury at Saints Peter and Paul Church. They were together until his death in 2006. Thomas enlisted in the Air Force during World War II, and stayed in as a career service man for 20 years. He and Angela enjoyed their years of service to their country. They were stationed in many areas of the world and their children were born in Massachusetts, New York and England.
The Griffin family lived for several years on Idylwood Avenue is Waterbury before moving to Maple Hill Road in Naugatuck, when Thomas retired from the service. In 1987, Thomas and Angela moved to Litchfield, CT to enjoy their retirement years.
Angela worked for many years for her later brother Joseph J. Corcoran, who owned J.J. Corcoran and Associates, a major fundraising organization for the Catholic Church. Many catholic churches and schools were built as a result of their efforts. Angela also worked for the State of Connecticut at the Southbury Training School, where she was Assistant Director of Personnel, retiring in 1982. Upon moving to Litchfield, she worked for the Town of Litchfield in the Assessor’s office.
Angela was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party, serving on the Litchfield Town Committee.  She was a personal friend of the late congressman John S. Monaghan and worked on many of his campaigns. She was a person of great faith which she passed on to her children, as she did her strong belief in the importance of family. She loved her family, and always put them first. She was a great cook, known in the family for her apple pies and “nameless cake,” and enjoyed traveling. 
Angela was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph J. and George F. Corcoran. She is survived by her sister, Mary K. Lucey of Wilton, formerly of Newtown, CT. She leaves behind five children, Pauline Voghel and her husband, Adrian, of Watertown, Mary K. Griffin of Torrington, Ann T. Griffin of Litchfield, who made her home with Angela and was her primary caregiver, John T. Griffin and his wife, Moira of Southbury, and Thomas V. Griffin of Brattleboro, VT. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Peggy, Edward, Caroline, Christopher, Justin, Ana and Kai; four great-grandchildren, William, Alicia, Madison and Dayton; her companion Florence Stentiford of Torrington; and several nieces and nephews.

Daniel J. Archer

Daniel John Archer, age 44, of Bantam, son of Wayne R. Archer, Sr. and Barbara (Moody) Archer, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2010.

James F. Bartholomew

 LITCHFIELD –James F. Bartholomew, 83, of 12 Dudley Road, died at his home on Monday evening, April 12, 2010. He was the husband of the late Gertrude (Gerda Marhoun) Bartholomew for 62 years.

Mr. Bartholomew was born August 2, 1926 in Newark, New Jersey, son of the late William J. and Sadie M. (Partridge) Bartholomew. He lived in Waterbury and Seymour and has been a Litchfield resident for the past 44 years.
 
He was an engineering graduate of the University of New Haven. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater of operations with the 42nd (Rainbow) infantry division. A long time member of the Rainbow Division Veterans Association, he served as past president of the Northeast Chapter of the R.D.V.A. He was also a member of Post 10199 (Litchfield) Veterans of Foreign Wars. An avid walker, he was a charter member of the Litchfield Hill Walkers Club. A lifetime, long suffering Red Sox fan, his boyhood hero was Jimmie Fox.
 
Mr. Bartholomew was employed as an engineer by the Connecticut Light and Power Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1990. He was superintendent of the CL&P Litchfield Service Center prior to its closing in the 1970’s.
He was a member of Litchfield United Methodist Church during which time he served as chairman of several committees.
 
He leaves three sons, Francis J. Bartholomew of Danbury, James M. Bartholomew of Winsted, and Robert W. Bartholomew of Cornwall; a sister, Joyce Thomas of Cheshire; two nieces, Carol Ford of Litchfield, and Patricia Chipko of Watertown; three grandchildren, Frank Seidel of Karlsfeld, Germany, Dawn Bernier of Torrington, and Michelle Kehaya of Colebrook and seven great grandchildren.
 
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 17, at United Methodist Church, West Street, Litchfield. Friends and Family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday April 16, at The Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Harry R. Rothe 

Harry R. Rothe, 62, lifelong New Milford resident, died April 7, 2010 at New Milford Hospital.

 
He was born on Oct. 5, 1947 to the late Robert and Eileen (Hendrix) Rothe. He worked for many years at J.P. Steven’s which was later known as New Milford Non Woven and most recently worked as a self-employed handyman.

 
Harry is survived by two daughters, Laura Swett and Amy Rothe; a son-in-law Mark Swett; his longtime companion, Karla Anderson of New Milford; the mother of his children, Donna Williams; three grandchildren, Shane, Tyler and Brett; three sisters, Linda Michaud and her husband, Sam, Kathy Burns and her husband, Bill, and Sue O’Dell and her husband, Richard; a brother, Dennis Rothe and his wife, Diane; a sister-in-law, Jane Rothe; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Jason Robert Rothe; and two brothers, Bobby and Jack Rothe.

R. Fletcher Skilton, known as Flet by almost everyone and as “Popey” by his family passed away on Easter Sunday in the loving care of his family.
 
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Palmer) Skilton of 70 years. In addition, he leaves three sons, Larry Skilton of South Windsor, CT, Richard Skilton, of Morris, CT and Ronald Skilton of Bedford, N.H. He also leaves a special daughter, Jeanne Harvey of Elberton, Georgia; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a brother, Donald Skilton of Allandale, Fla., and a brother-in-law, who was like a brother, Ray Palmer of Bantam, CT.
 
Flet was born on November 25, 1921, to the late Elton and Lillian (Fletcher) Skilton, he lived his life in Morris, CT either in his house on Benton Road or his cottage on Bantam Lake. He graduated from Morris High School as the class salutatorian and was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. Flet was an active member of town, being the last charter member of the Morris Fire Department. He held all ranks including Chief in the last 40 years he served and was part of building the first fire truck in Morris. Flet was also the Fire Marshall, had served on the Tax Appeals Board and was a member of the American Legion Post # 173 in Morris. He was also involved in the Republican Town Committee. 
 
A mechanic by trade, Flet worked 45 years for Anaconda American Brass of Waterbury as their Head Mechanic. Flet’s passion was building and fixing everything. Flet built his home, his cars, his boats. He built everything. Boating was another of his passion’s whether it was on Bantam Lake in a sail boat he built, or cruising up the St. Lawrence or to Cape Cod in a Cabin Cruiser he completely rebuilt.
 
Flet rehabbed the 250 year old barn in Morris Center and had his own snowmobile business for a few years until his son and daughter-in-law opened the landmark Popey’s Ice Cream Shoppe named after him. (He then became Popey’s maintenance engineer.)

Nikolaos Lymperopoulos
 
LITCHFIELD - Nikolaos Lymperopoulos, 40, of Litchfield passed away suddenly Thursday, April 1, 2010. Born May 20, 1969 in Athens, Greece, he was the son of Maria and Kayriakos Lymperopoulos. 
 
He is survived by his loving wife, Gail (Sullivan) Leifert Lymperopoulos of Winsted; and stepson, Jeremy Leifert, and his wife, Stephanie. In addition, he leaves a brother, sister-in-law, his extended family in Greece, and many close friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his step mother.
 
“Niko’s” reputation as a gracious host is well known in this area. As manager of DaCapo Restaurant of Litchfield and Avon, he was a well-respected, successful entrepreneur. His warm smile and contagious laugh made everyone feel like family. He was dedicated to work, compassionate and kind. He took joy in family and friends and enjoyed entertaining them with gourmet food and a glass of red wine.

Jeanne M. Nolan

TORRINGTON - Jeanne Marion Nolan, age 70, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010 at Hartford Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Robert T. Nolan.

 
Born in Torrington on October 11, 1939, she was the daughter of the late David and Marion (Beyer) Williamson. She was a graduate of Torrington High School, class of 1957 and Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1961. She worked for over 30 years at Winsted hospital as an RN. She enjoyed taking rides, attending parades and family gatherings, and the Boston Red Sox with her husband, Bob, the love of her life.

 
She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Gerardi and her husband Ralph of Westerville, Ohio; a son, David Nolan of Torrington; a sister, Linda Furnas and her husband, Lou, of Stafford Spring. She will be missed by her adoring grandson, Jonathan Gerardi. Also surviving are her stepbrothers, Wilfred, Paul, Clifford and Charles McDonald; and several nieces and nephews whom she cared for deeply. She was predeceased by her sister, Patricia Knox; stepmother, Agnes Williamson; and stepbrothers, Lawrence and Ernest McDonald.

 
A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will follow in New St. Francis Cemetery, Torrington. Friends and family may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 31 at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home.

Frank H. Keller

Frank H. Keller, 86, husband of Charlotte (Haller) Keller, passed away peacefully on March 26, surrounded by his family. Born in Oneida, NY April 10, 1923, he was the son of the late Hugo F. and Caroline Oatman Keller. He grew up in Oneida and spent summers at the family camp at Kinlock Point on Onedia Lake. He attended Oneida High School and Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana.
He served in the US Army medical corps at Valley Forge Army Hospital, Phoenixville, PA, where he met his wife, Charlotte Haller. They were married at the Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge, PA on February 16, 1945. They recently celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary. They raised five children, and enjoyed their eight grandchildren and nine great-granddaughters.
Frank co-owned the Keller Motor Company in Oneida with his brother Bud until 1968. He moved his family to Litchfield in 1969 and worked for Allis Chalmers and Janell and Sons truck bodies until his retirement in 1988. He is a past elder of the First Presbyterain Church of Oneida, NY, and a past Deacon of the First Congregational Church of Litchfield.
During his younger years he was a race car driver, racing in the Northeast circuit in the early days of Nascar, from 1949 to 1953. He was also a licensed airplane pilot. Later in life he enjoyed gardening, golf, home projects, family gatherings, vacations on the shores of North Carolina, reunions of Oneida High School class of 1941, exploring and documenting the Keller family history, including his mother's Erie Canal heritage, and watching Nascar racing. After his retirement, he enjoyed spending winters in Tarpon Springs, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte, of Litchfield, his brother Hugo (Bud) Keller and sister Norma Coulthart of Oneida, and sister Carolyn Dreibelbis of Newtown Square, PA. His five children include four sons: Charles Keller and companion Carolyn Nelson of Terryville, Frank E. Keller and wife Karen of Winston-Salem, NC, William Keller and wife Barbara of Litchfield, and James Keller and wife Brenda of Litchfield, and a daughter, Jean Evangelisti and husband Richard of Litchfield.

Ella Ascolese

BANTAM - Ella Ascolese, 88, passed away on Monday, March 15, 2010 at New Milford Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dominic L. Ascolese.
 
Born in Danbury on March 19, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Mary (Marcowski) Chowanec. Ella operated the family dairy farm with her husband for over 40 years. She loved the land, walking the pastures and caring for her family and the animals on the farm.
 
Ella is survived by her four daughters, Ellen Hamill and her husband, Jim, of Bantam, Virginia Ascolese, of Bantam, M. Mary Hitchcock of Torrington and Anne Ascolese of Bantam; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her nine brothers and sisters.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Grace Cemetery. Calling hours will be held at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield, on Friday, March 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, March 20 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the Mass.

Carl E. Kallgren

Litchfield – Carl E. Kallgren, 87, of Goodhouse Road, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
He is survived by Beverly H. Kallgren, his wife of 61 years, as well as his son Carl P. Kallgren and daughter-in-law Cynthia R. Kallgren of Goshen, his daughter Jennifer K. McEachern and Thomas A. Masterson, also of Goshen, and his grandchildren, Ian and Alissa Kallgren and Sarah and Matthew McEachern.
Carl was born in Gardner, Massachusetts on November 15, 1922 and grew up in the Morris Cove section of New Haven. He graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven in 1941 and continued his education at Junior College of Commerce, New Haven Junior College and The University of Hartford.
In 1943, Carl entered the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1946, after serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operation, specifically the Eastern Signal Corps in Japan.
He was employed at Professional Equipment Company in New Haven as a salesman and technician. After gaining knowledge of the field of medical electronics he went on to work as a purchasing agent and then plant engineer at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital for 12 years and onto the position of administrative engineer at Waterbury Hospital for 20 years. Upon retiring, he developed his lifelong passion for collecting antique postcards into a fulltime business.
Carl was past president of The Connecticut Hospital Engineer’s Society, past member of the Litchfield Board of Education, member and past president of the Sanctum Club in Litchfield, member and past president of The Connecticut Post Card Club, member of the Waterbury Stamp Club as well as several local historical societies in the area and an active member of the First Congregational Church in Litchfield. Carl also loved skiing, which he continued to do well into his eighties.
With a smile and a joke he was always ready to laugh and spread joy to those around him. He will be greatly missed.
A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Nancie E. McCann

Litchfield – Nancie Ellen McCann, of Bantam Village passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital after a brief illness. 
 
Nancie was born in Hartford, daughter of Florence (Johnson) McCann and Thomas James McCann. She was a 1952 graduate of Sweet Briar College in Virginia and earned a Master of Science Degree from Central Connecticut in 1969. She spent the majority of her career in the field of education. In her later years, she wrote children's books and was a librarian at Oliver Wolcott Library. Nancie considered Litchfield her home, where she returned after her career to live and care for her mother, Florence. She and her mother loved to entertain their many close friends at their home in Northfield. Nancie never married, and is survived by her late brother Tom's children; Kate of Washington, D.C. and Tom III of Philadelphia, PA. She was predeceased by her cousin, Mary Ellen Adamo, and leaves her husband Michael of New Hartford. She also leaves her cousins, Frank, Jim, Ed and Joe McCann and their families. Also, her cousin Kathleen of Newport News and Carol Micket and family also of Newport News. She also leaves her first cousins, Alison, Barbara, Arlene and their families and several close friends in Litchfield.
           
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Oliver Wolcott Library, P.O. Jean H. Ricker, Jr.

Jean H. Ricker, Jr., 76, died unexpectedly, March 8, 2010. He was the husband of 39 years of Peggy M. Ricker. Jean worked for many years in Commercial Real Estate Development in New York.
 
In addition to his wife Peggy, he is survived by a daughter Kathryn Ricker of Sarasota, FL, a sister, Marcia Ricker of New York City and “Trisket The Terrible.” At Jean's request there will be no services. Rowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joshua Morin

Joshua A. Morin, 20, died unexpectedly March 4, 2010. He was the son of Donald Morin and Michelle Russell Morin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandfather, Ronald Russell of RI, his paternal grandmother, Suzanne S. Switzer of Litchfield, a daughter, Yailen Marie Morin of Waterbury, three brothers; Zachary T. Morin, Robert M. Morin and Kevin A. Morin all of Litchfield and several aunts and uncles.
 
A memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 25 South Street, Litchfield, on Saturday, March 13 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be private. Rowe Funeral Home of Litchfield is in charge of arrangements. Anthony A. Lucia

TORRINGTON - Anthony A. “Gus” Lucia ,63, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital. He was the husband of Lois (Crane) Lucia for 41 years.

Born in Torrington on Nov. 3, 1946 he was the son of Alice (Seymour) Wellersdick and the late Anthony W. Lucia, Jr. and grandson to Anthony Sr. and Virginia Lucia.  He had been a lifelong Torrington resident and had worked for the city for 23 years. A Vietnam veteran, who served in the U.S. Navy, he will be remembered by many for his years of participation in Christmas Village, and by many couples for whom he performed wedding ceremonies for as a J.P. He was also an active member of the Democratic Town committee.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his sons, James Lucia of Winsted, and Jason Lucia and his wife Tanya of Torrington; daughter, Jennifer Lucia of Waterbury, sisters, Sandy, Marcy, Mary, Rose, Tina, Theresa, Lisa, Suzanne and Antoinette, four grandchildren, Mahkai, Samantha, Anthony and Daniel; stepmother, Elizabeth Lucia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Shelia Lucia and Madeline Cote.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10: 30 a.m. Monday, March 8, 2010 at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, East Main Street, Torrington. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Friends and family may call on Sunday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Nutting-Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Joseph John Whalen

Joseph John Whalen, 70, of Winsted, died Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington after a long illness. He was the husband of Sandra Whalen. They married on June 29, 1963.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1940, in Bridgeport, CT, the son of the late Alice Clark. Joseph was a truck driver for Tilcon until he retired in 2002. He had many activities but his main interest was teaching the bible in surrounding communities. He did this for 56 years as a member of the Winsted Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Besides his wife, he leaves behind his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Linda Wilson and her husband, Dale, of Traverse City, MI, Philip Osborne and his wife, Leslie, of San Diego, CA, Mischele Smith and her husband, Maurice, of Danielson, Debbie Barrow and her husband, Dan, of Warwick, RI, Michael Osborne of Danielson, CT, Jodi DeSoto and her husband, Kevin, of Warwick, RI and Joseph Osborne of New York. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

 Mary Linda Banks

Mary Linda Banks of Norfolk, CT passed away at the Litchfield Woods Nursing Home on February 20, 2010. She is survived by a daughter, Kristine Dyson of Litchfield, CT and two granddaughters, Stephanie and Jessica of Boston, MA.

Mary Linda Banks was born on September 3, 1918 in Philadelphia, PA .   Her maiden name was Mary Linda Keiser. She attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Philadelphia and was married to Nelson C. Schotter. Her father-in-law was the late Howard Schotter, Treasurer of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Two children were born to the marriage, Howard and Kristine.
 
Mary Linda was remarried in 1957 to Hollywood screenwriter, novelist and producer Polan Banks and resided in New York, Mexico City, Los Angeles and Palm Beach until coming to Norfolk in 2001 where she enjoyed the beautiful, unspoilt landscape of Northwest Connecticut and was welcomed by Norfolk's hospitable and generous local townspeople.
 
Mary had a great flair and fashion sense. She worked in interior design in New York City and in fashion for Jaeger, and in Palm Beach for Martha, Inc. She carried trophies away for her many wins at the bridge table and on the golf links.
 
Originally raised as Catholic, Mary Linda converted to the Russian Orthodox faith after the death of her son and was baptized in the Orthodox Church in 1996 at The Holy Trinity Monastery in Jordanville, New York.

John H. Hannon, Jr.

John J. Hannon Jr. died peacefully at his home in Litchfield, CT on February 19, 2010 at the age of 92. He was born on January 3, 1918 in Litchfield, CT, to the parents of John J. and Catherine Moraghan Hannon. He attended the Litchfield school system and worked on his family farm and in his father’s businesses on West Street in Litchfield, including J.J. Hannon Meats and Provisions.
He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as a courier during World War II. He met US Army nurse Rita Walker while stationed in New Zealand. They were later married on “One Tree Hill” in Auckland, New Zealand on February 18, 1943. John was recalled to active duty by the Air Force, and served in the Korean War. He left the Air Force as a Captain in 1951.
John worked for the State of Connecticut. He had been retired for 37 years. He and his wife enjoyed many vacation trips with their best friends, John and Ruth Rubino.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Rita Walker Hannon, his son David and his wife Barbara of Litchfield, his daughter Catherine Hannon and her husband Charles Bernacchio of Hillsborough, North Carolina; his special friends George and Cindy Iffland of Litchfield; five grandchildren, Maureen Hannon, Roy Hannon, Wendy Iffland Trausi, Catherine Iffland Winters, and Michaela Bernacchio; and four great grandchildren, Peter Hannon, Charles Hannon, Ethan Hannon and Kayla DePino. He was predeceased by his daughter Joy Hannon Iffland, his sister Mary Hannon and his brother Frank Hannon.
John’s funeral will be held at 11:30 A.M. Mrs. Ruth French

Ruth Inez French, 80, passed away on February 15th, 2010 at home surrounded by her loving family. Born August 31, 1929 in Waterbury she was the daughter of the late Bertrand and Lillian (Cummings) LaVigne.
 
Ruth loved her flowers and treasured her gardens. She loved traveling especially to Texas for the winter, with her husband, to enjoy the warmth and company of all the friends she made. 
 
Ruth is survived by her husband Walter, of nearly sixty years, four children David L. French of California, Jeffrey A. French and his wife Sherry of Litchfield, Holly B. Martin and her husband George of Winchester Center and Wendy Murdock and her husband Russ of Goshen. Seven beautiful granddaughters; Brandy Serkey and her husband Randy of Harwinton, Sarah French of N.C., Jamie Shuhi of Torrington, Andria French of Litchfield, Nikki & Robyn French of California and Christina Kent of Goshen. Two Great grandchildren Skyla-Mae Serkey and Tristan Thiesse.   Her sisters Barbara Peck of Watertown and Sally Hanrahan and her husband Donald of Northfield. Also a special niece Susan Deering and her family as well as many nieces and nephews.
 
The family would like to thank the VNS of CT hospice at home team as well as mom’s wonderful caregivers; Lori, Mary and Patti for all their love and support.

Philip "PJ" Bialoglowy, II

Philip “PJ” Bialoglowy II, 39, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010.
 
Born in Waterbury on September 23, 1970, he was the son of Philip John Bialoglowy and Margaret Robinson. He grew up in Litchfield and had attended the University of New Haven and later completed his Bachelor’s degree while working as a police officer for the Winsted Police Department. An officer since 1997, PJ was a member of the ERT Team and the Northwest Regional Accident Investigation team. He was a certified reconstructionist and the Union President.
 
A 20-year member of the Litchfield Fire Department, PJ had also been involved with The Litchfield Ambulance and had been a paramedic for Campion Ambulance. He was a coach and mentor for Overlook Sports Association in Waterbury.
 
In addition to his parents, PJ is survived by his son, Drew Bialoglowy, step-daughters, Jessica and Sarah Lynn, and their mother, Karen Bialoglowy; a brother, Keith Bialoglowy and his fiancé, Danielle LaFleur; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law; mother-in-law, Joan Brown and his father’s fiancé, Valerie Jo Gavagan.
 
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 9:00 a.m.on Monday, February 15 at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street, Litchfield. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Torrington. Friends and family may call on Sunday, Feb. 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Rowe Funeral Home 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield.

Catherine Yoder

Catherine Schwanfelder Yoder, 98, of Litchfield, CT. passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at home. 
 
Catherine was born in Stony Creek, CT and raised in Branford, CT. She was the loving daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Hineburg) Schwanfelder and one of six children. Her husband of 40 years, Morton, preceded her in death. 
 
She is survived by her son, David and his wife, Sherril; and a niece and several nephews. She has lived the past 55 years in Litchfield. 
 
Funeral services will take place at St. Michaels Episcopal Church, 25 South Street, Litchfield, on February, 16th at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Center Cemetery in Branford, CT.
